Working through percentages, equations and statistics without losing the thread

Students, engineers, shoppers and anyone reading a spreadsheet run into the same maths over and over: what percent is this of that, what is the average of these values, how spread out is the data, what is the missing side of the triangle. A calculator saves arithmetic time, but its real value is in letting you check your own reasoning. If a quick tool disagrees with your hand calculation, that disagreement is a prompt to find which of you made the slip. That habit of checking is worth more than any single answer.

Before trusting a result, make sure you understand the question the tool is answering. Standard deviation comes in sample and population versions that give different numbers. A mean can be badly distorted by a single outlier where a median would not be. Permutations count ordered arrangements while combinations ignore order. Logarithms need a base, and trigonometric tools need to know whether angles are in degrees or radians. Picking the wrong variant produces a clean-looking but wrong answer. When in doubt, read the tool description and the formula it uses before relying on the figure.

The most common errors are input errors rather than calculation errors: a percentage entered as 0.15 when the tool wants 15, a negative sign dropped, or a fraction typed as a decimal that was rounded too early. Rounding in the middle of a multi-step problem can quietly compound. Keep full precision until the final step, sanity-check whether the answer is the right size, and remember that a tool can only solve the problem you typed, not the one you meant. Estimating the answer roughly in your head first makes wrong results stand out immediately.

Which calculator should you use?

If you want to...UseWhy
I want to find what percent one number is of another, or the percent change between twoPercentage CalculatorIt covers the common percentage questions in one place, from percent of a value to increase and decrease.
I want the mean, median or most frequent value in a list of numbersMedian & Mode CalculatorIt shows the central values side by side so you can see whether outliers are pulling the average.
I want to know how spread out my data isStandard DeviationIt measures how far values sit from the mean and lets you work with sample or population data.
I want to find the missing side of a right trianglePythagorean TheoremGive it any two sides and it returns the third using the a squared plus b squared rule.
I want to solve an equation of the form ax squared plus bx plus c equals zeroQuadratic Equation SolverIt finds the roots and tells you whether they are real or complex.
I want to compare how my score stands against a groupZ-Score CalculatorIt converts a value into the number of standard deviations from the mean.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the population formula for a sample, or the reverse, when computing standard deviation.
  • Rounding early in a multi-step problem and letting the error grow.
  • Using the wrong base for a percentage change, such as dividing by the new value instead of the old.
  • Leaving a calculator in degree mode when a problem uses radians.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?

Population standard deviation divides by the number of values and applies when you have every member of the group. Sample standard deviation divides by one less and applies when your data is a subset used to estimate a larger group. For small samples the two figures differ noticeably.

When should I use median instead of average?

Use the median when a few extreme values would distort the mean, such as incomes or house prices. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted, so one very large or small number barely moves it. The mean is better when data is fairly symmetric.

What is the difference between a permutation and a combination?

A permutation counts arrangements where order matters, such as the finishing places in a race. A combination counts selections where order does not matter, such as choosing a committee. For the same inputs, permutations always give the larger or equal number. Both are useful in probability and statistics problems.

Why does my calculator give a different trig answer than my textbook?

Almost always the angle mode is wrong. A value of 90 means ninety degrees in degree mode but an enormous number of radians in radian mode. Check the mode before reading anything else into the result. Calculators and spreadsheets also let you change it in settings.

How do I calculate a percentage increase correctly?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide that difference by the old value, then multiply by 100. The old value is always the base. A rise from 50 to 75 is 50 percent, but a fall from 75 to 50 is only about 33 percent. The same rule works for decreases, discounts and price changes.
