Conversion Rate Formulas

Conversion Rate

Conversion Rate = (Conversions ÷ Visitors) × 100

Example: (150 ÷ 5,000) × 100 = 3%

Visitors Needed for a Goal

Visitors Needed = Target Conversions ÷ (Rate% ÷ 100)

Example: 200 ÷ 0.025 = 8,000 visitors

Funnel Stage Drop-off

Stage Conversion % = (Stage Count ÷ Previous Stage Count) × 100
Drop-off % = 100 − Stage Conversion %

Frequently Asked Questions

Conversion Rate = (Number of Conversions ÷ Number of Visitors) × 100. For example, if a page had 5,000 visitors and 150 made a purchase, the conversion rate is (150 ÷ 5,000) × 100 = 3%.
It varies enormously by industry, traffic source, and conversion type. E-commerce sites often see 2-4% for purchases, while a simple email signup can see 20%+ on a well-optimized landing page. Rather than chasing an industry-wide 'good' number, it's usually more useful to track your own conversion rate over time and test changes against your own baseline.
Divide your target number of conversions by your expected conversion rate (as a decimal). If you need 200 sales and expect a 2.5% conversion rate, you need 200 ÷ 0.025 = 8,000 visitors.
A conversion funnel breaks a multi-step process (like visit → add to cart → checkout → purchase) into stages, and drop-off is the percentage of people lost between each stage. Tracking drop-off by stage, rather than only the final conversion rate, shows exactly where to focus improvement efforts - a funnel with a 90% drop-off at 'add to cart' has a very different problem than one dropping off at final checkout.

Conversion Rate Calculator - Rate, Traffic Goals & Funnel Breakdown

Conversion rate is the fundamental metric for judging whether traffic actually turns into results - sales, signups, leads, or any other defined goal. This calculator covers the three most common conversion questions: finding your current rate, working backward to see how much traffic a goal requires, and breaking a multi-step process into a funnel to spot exactly where people are lost.

Key formula: Conversion Rate = (Conversions ÷ Visitors) × 100
Quick example: 150 conversions from 5,000 visitors = 3% conversion rate

Why "Good" Conversion Rates Vary So Widely

Conversion rate benchmarks differ enormously by industry, traffic source, and what counts as a "conversion." A cold-traffic e-commerce store might see 1-2% purchase rates, while a highly targeted email list promoting a free resource might convert at 30%+. Comparing your rate to a generic industry average is far less useful than tracking your own rate over time and measuring the impact of specific changes (a new headline, a shorter form, a different offer) against your own baseline.

Reading a Funnel: Where to Focus

A multi-step funnel (say, visit add to cart checkout purchase) almost always has one stage that loses far more people than the others. Calculating drop-off at each individual stage - not just the overall start-to-finish conversion rate - reveals exactly where to focus optimization effort. A funnel losing 80% of people between "add to cart" and "checkout" has a fundamentally different problem (and fix) than one losing 80% between "checkout" and "purchase."

How this calculator works, and where the numbers come from

The Conversion Rate Calculator applies the standard formula for this calculation to the values you enter and updates the result as you type. The calculation itself happens in your browser, and the page explains the method so you can check any result by hand.

Please note: Results are estimates based on the numbers you enter, not accounting or financial advice.
