Frequently Asked Questions

The formula depends on your university. The most common ones: CBSE and Delhi University use Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (example: 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%). Most engineering colleges including VTU, Anna University, JNTU, NIT use Percentage = CGPA × 10 (example: 8.0 × 10 = 80%). Mumbai University uses Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 (example: 8.0 − 0.75 = 7.25, × 10 = 72.5%). Pune University (SPPU, older batches) uses Percentage = CGPA × 7.1 + 11. Always check your specific university marksheet or official circular for the correct formula.
8.5 CGPA converts differently depending on the formula: CBSE/Delhi University (×9.5) = 80.75%. Generic/VTU/Anna/JNTU (×10) = 85.0%. Mumbai University ((−0.75)×10) = 77.5%. Pune University (×7.1+11) = 71.35%. The most frequently cited answer for engineering students is 85% (using the standard ×10 formula). For CBSE students, it is 80.75%.
CBSE designed its grading system so that the midpoint of each grade band corresponds to approximately 9.5 times the grade point. For example, the A1 grade (10 points) covers 91–100%, with a midpoint around 95 - which is 10 × 9.5. CBSE officially published the × 9.5 formula as the standard way to convert CGPA to equivalent percentage marks. This formula applies specifically to CBSE Class 10 results and has been adopted by Delhi University for admission purposes.
Mumbai University (University of Mumbai) uses: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. The 0.75 subtraction is a Mumbai-specific adjustment built into their grading system. For a CGPA of 8.0: (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%. For a CGPA of 9.0: (9.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 82.5%. This means Mumbai University students will always report a lower percentage than students from colleges using the standard ×10 formula for the same CGPA - an important difference when comparing between universities.
IITs do not have a single official universal conversion formula, and many IIT academic departments explicitly state that CGPA should not be converted to percentage for comparison purposes. Each IIT may have its own internal scale. NITs generally use the ×10 formula for simplicity. For job applications, most major employers (especially IT companies) now accept IIT CGPA directly without requiring conversion. For foreign university applications, report your CGPA as 'X/10' and let the institution or credential evaluator handle comparison on their scale.
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the GPA for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the running average across all completed semesters, weighted by credits. Most universities report both on transcripts: SGPA for each individual semester and a cumulative CGPA at the bottom. For final degree certificates, job applications, and higher education applications, CGPA is the number that matters. SGPA is useful for tracking semester-by-semester performance and identifying which semesters need improvement.
The conversion is approximate since the two systems measure different things. Rough equivalences: 4.0 GPA ≈ 9.5–10 CGPA (90–95%+). 3.7 GPA ≈ 8.7–9.2 CGPA (87–92%). 3.5 GPA ≈ 8.2–8.7 CGPA (82–87%). 3.0 GPA ≈ 7.0–7.5 CGPA (70–75%). 2.5 GPA ≈ 6.0–6.5 CGPA (60–65%). For official purposes - US visa applications, credential recognition, foreign university transfers - always use a formal evaluation from WES (World Education Services) or a recognised credential evaluator rather than an online conversion.
Classification varies slightly by university but the most common thresholds in India are: First Class with Distinction: 75% and above (some universities set this at 70%). First Class: 60% to 74.9%. Second Class (Upper): 55% to 59.9% (not all universities have this). Second Class: 50% to 54.9%. Pass Class: 40% to 49.9%. On a 10-point CGPA scale with generic ×10 conversion: Distinction ≈ 7.5 CGPA+, First Class ≈ 6.0–7.4 CGPA, Pass Class ≈ 4.0–5.9 CGPA. Always check your specific university's classification criteria - they vary.

CGPA to Percentage - The Correct Formula for Your University

Converting CGPA to percentage in India sounds simple until you realise that different boards and universities use genuinely different formulas - and using the wrong one gives a significantly different result. A student with a 8.5 CGPA could report anywhere from 71.35% to 85% depending on which formula applies. This matters for job applications, admission forms, scholarship eligibility, and any document where percentage is required alongside or instead of CGPA.

Most searched conversions: 8.5 CGPA in % = 80.75% (CBSE) or 85% (generic). 7.5 CGPA in % = 71.25% (CBSE) or 75% (generic). 9.0 CGPA in % = 85.5% (CBSE), 90% (generic), or 82.5% (Mumbai University).

What Is CGPA and How Is It Calculated?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the weighted average of all your semester grade point averages, where each semester's GPA is weighted by the number of credits that semester carries. In India, most universities use a 10-point grading scale where letter grades correspond to specific grade points:

  • O (Outstanding) - 10 grade points - 90–100%
  • A+ (Excellent) - 9 grade points - 80–89%
  • A (Very Good) - 8 grade points - 70–79%
  • B+ (Good) - 7 grade points - 60–69%
  • B (Above Average) - 6 grade points - 50–59%
  • C (Satisfactory) - 5 grade points - 45–49%
  • P (Pass) - 4 grade points - 40–44%
  • F (Fail) - 0 grade points

The CGPA calculation: CGPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Course Credits) ÷ Total Credits Completed. This means a 5-credit subject carries more weight in your CGPA than a 1-credit subject.

CGPA vs Percentage - Which Should You Use in Job Applications?

This is one of the most common questions for final-year students and recent graduates. The practical answer has shifted in recent years:

Most large Indian companies - especially IT firms like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and Accenture - now accept CGPA directly and state eligibility criteria as "6.0 CGPA" or "7.5 CGPA" rather than percentage. This reduces the confusion caused by different university formulas.

For government jobs, PSU applications, and traditional industries, percentage is still often required. In those cases, use the official formula from your university marksheet or the formula your university has officially communicated. If you're unsure, state the formula used: "85% (CGPA 8.5 × 10)" or "79.8% (CGPA 8.4 × 9.5 per CBSE formula)".

For foreign university applications and visa purposes, always include your CGPA, the scale (e.g., "8.5/10"), and the percentage with the formula used. WES (World Education Services) and other credential evaluation bodies will do their own conversion - your job is to provide accurate raw data.
