📐 The Formula

Final Grade Formula

Course Grade = Current Grade × (1 − FinalWeight) + Final Score × FinalWeight Rearranging to find needed Final Score: Final Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − FinalWeight)) / FinalWeight Where all percentages are as decimals (0 to 1) Example: Current 78%, Target 83%, Final weight 30% Needed = (0.83 − 0.78 × 0.70) / 0.30 = (0.83 − 0.546) / 0.30 = 0.284 / 0.30 = 94.7%

Understanding the Variables

Current Grade: Your grade on all non-final work completed so far (assignments, quizzes, midterms, projects) Expressed as a percentage out of 100 Final Exam Weight: The percentage of total course grade the final is worth Example: if final = 30%, non-final work = 70% Target Grade: The minimum course grade you want to achieve Use exact cutoffs (e.g., 93 for an A, not 90) Important: "Current grade" should represent only the non-final portion, normalised to 100%. If your professor has shown your grade as "70% of total so far", convert it before entering.

When Is the Target Impossible?

If Needed Score exceeds 100%: Even a perfect final exam score cannot get you to your target grade. Consider: - Lowering your target grade - Talking to your professor about extra credit - Understanding the impact on your GPA If Needed Score is negative or very low: You have already secured the grade regardless of your final exam score. Still take it seriously as professors may require a minimum final score.
