The most accurate method to calculate the difference between two dates is to convert both to a universal time reference (milliseconds since January 1, 1970), subtract them, and divide by the number of milliseconds in a day (86,400,000). This approach automatically accounts for every calendar variation - different month lengths, leap years, and the irregular distribution of days across the year.
The formula: Total Days = (End Date in ms − Start Date in ms) ÷ 86,400,000. From total days, all other values follow: total weeks = days ÷ 7, total hours = days × 24, total minutes = hours × 60, total seconds = minutes × 60.
The exact breakdown (years, months, days) requires a slightly different approach: calculate full years first by checking whether the month/day anniversary has been reached in the final year, then calculate remaining months and days. This is why "2 years, 3 months, and 5 days" and "851 total days" are both accurate descriptions of the same interval - they measure the same thing differently.

A leap year has 366 days instead of 365, adding one extra day in February. Leap years occur every 4 years, with the exception that century years (like 1900, 1800) are only leap years if they're also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not.
