CGPA to Percentage - The Correct Formula for Your University
Converting CGPA to percentage in India sounds simple until you realise that different boards and universities use genuinely different formulas - and using the wrong one gives a significantly different result. A student with a 8.5 CGPA could report anywhere from 71.35% to 85% depending on which formula applies. This matters for job applications, admission forms, scholarship eligibility, and any document where percentage is required alongside or instead of CGPA.
The Main Formulas Used in India - University by University
CBSE and Delhi University - × 9.5
- Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
- Used by CBSE Class 10 grading system
- Also followed by Delhi University, MDU Rohtak
- Example: 8.4 CGPA = 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%
- CBSE officially published this as their standard formula
- Reverse: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
Most Engineering Colleges - × 10
- Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 10
- Used by VTU, Anna University, JNTU, NIT, IIT (approx)
- Also used by Osmania, MG University, AMU, BHU, GGSIPU
- Example: 8.4 CGPA = 8.4 × 10 = 84.0%
- Simplest formula - the most widely used in engineering
- Reverse: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 10
Mumbai University - (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
- Formula: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
- Unique to Mumbai University (University of Mumbai)
- The 0.75 subtraction is a Mumbai-specific adjustment
- Example: 8.4 CGPA = (8.4 − 0.75) × 10 = 76.5%
- Significantly lower than generic formula - understand before using
- Reverse: CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75
Pune University (SPPU) - × 7.1 + 11
- Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 7.1 + 11
- Used by Savitribai Phule Pune University (older batches)
- Newer batches (post-2019 onwards) may use ×10
- Example: 8.4 CGPA = 8.4 × 7.1 + 11 = 70.6%
- Always verify which formula your admit year uses
- Produces the lowest percentage of all standard formulas

What Is CGPA and How Is It Calculated?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the weighted average of all your semester grade point averages, where each semester's GPA is weighted by the number of credits that semester carries. In India, most universities use a 10-point grading scale where letter grades correspond to specific grade points:
- O (Outstanding) - 10 grade points - 90–100%
- A+ (Excellent) - 9 grade points - 80–89%
- A (Very Good) - 8 grade points - 70–79%
- B+ (Good) - 7 grade points - 60–69%
- B (Above Average) - 6 grade points - 50–59%
- C (Satisfactory) - 5 grade points - 45–49%
- P (Pass) - 4 grade points - 40–44%
- F (Fail) - 0 grade points
The CGPA calculation: CGPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Course Credits) ÷ Total Credits Completed. This means a 5-credit subject carries more weight in your CGPA than a 1-credit subject.
CGPA vs Percentage - Which Should You Use in Job Applications?
This is one of the most common questions for final-year students and recent graduates. The practical answer has shifted in recent years:
Most large Indian companies - especially IT firms like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and Accenture - now accept CGPA directly and state eligibility criteria as "6.0 CGPA" or "7.5 CGPA" rather than percentage. This reduces the confusion caused by different university formulas.
For government jobs, PSU applications, and traditional industries, percentage is still often required. In those cases, use the official formula from your university marksheet or the formula your university has officially communicated. If you're unsure, state the formula used: "85% (CGPA 8.5 × 10)" or "79.8% (CGPA 8.4 × 9.5 per CBSE formula)".
For foreign university applications and visa purposes, always include your CGPA, the scale (e.g., "8.5/10"), and the percentage with the formula used. WES (World Education Services) and other credential evaluation bodies will do their own conversion - your job is to provide accurate raw data.
